Each week get to know one of our amazing staff members as they talk about their writing heroes, advice to writers, and what book is currently sitting on their nightstand.
This week, meet Roseanne Cheng!
Wise Ink: Describe your role at Wise Ink in two sentences or less.
Roseanne Cheng: I help authors get their books into the world.
WI: What is your day at Wise Ink normally look like?
RC: One of the things I love about my job is that no day is the same. Some days I’m in back to back author meetings, and others I’m behind my computer working on book marketing campaigns. Each author and each book is different, so it’s truly a new challenge every day.
WI: What types of books are your favorites to publish, and why?
RC: I am partial to books that serve a greater purpose beyond entertainment. It is an awesome feeling to help an author use their book to inspire positive change in the world.
WI: Who are some of your writing heroes?
RC: As far as craft goes, Jonathan Safran Foer and Jhumpa Lahiri are my favorites. I love everything they do. Stephen King’s book On Writing is phenomenal and a must-read for any author.
WI: If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring author, what would you say?
RC: Don’t listen to other authors giving you advice about writing. For some people, writing groups work. For some people, they don’t. Some people prefer to write in small chunks in the mornings, some prefer a week long writer’s retreat. Some people need outlines. Some people need outlines. Some people need music. This whole journey is so personal, so do what works for YOU, and see the book through. Once you do that, believe in it. Then the publishing journey becomes fun.
WI: What are you currently reading?
RC: I just finished My Absolute Darling, by Gabriel Tallent. It is haunting and very difficult to read, yet totally brilliant.
